The Cape Town Met 2025

25 January 2025

Horse racing is as much a part of summer as visits to the beach and poolside cocktails.

There's no better way to celebrate this sizzling season than at one of South Africa’s most renowned social, fashion and sporting events, the Cape Town Met, brought to you by World Sports Betting.

The biggest race of the summer sees South Africa’s top racehorses compete for a purse of R5 million. While tradition and equestrian pageantry may be central to the historic horse race, the Cape Town Met (formerly the Sun Met) has become synonymous with decadent glamour. Here, fashion, celebrities and high-stakes betting meet in a sophisticated and exhilarating spectacle to celebrate the grace and speed of South Africa’s top racehorses.

Since the first official running of The Metropolitan Mile (later shortened to ‘The Met’) in 1883, the event has been a highlight of the social calendar. Every year on the last Saturday in January, Africa’s richest horse race draws over 50 000 people to the Kenilworth Racecourse.

An important contest, the Cape Town Met puts South Africa’s top racehorses on an even footing and features an honour roll which includes many of South Africa’s top racehorses, such as Ariel, Pocket Power, Wolf Power, Model Man, Empress Club, London News and Horse Chestnut.

If you want to experience the world of celebrity couture, endless champagne and thoroughbred horses in January, put your best foot forward in the fashion department (there’s always a theme to the Cape Town Met, with prizes awarded to the Best Dressed Couple) you should attend the Cape Town Met.

Destinations

Cape Town

From the busy waterfront to the mountains, forests, beaches and vineyards, Cape Town’s bounty of things to see and do can be overwhelming, even for the most seasoned travellers. Start with a visit to the V&A Waterfront, the most visited tourist attraction in South Africa featuring world-class shopping, excellent dining and entertaining nightlife. Take a stroll along the Sea Point Promenade to the Green Point Urban Park, which showcases some spectacular public artworks. Alternatively, tackle one of Cape Town’s many hiking trails - Newlands Forest offers a leisurely wander while Lion’s Head poses more of a challenge. As far as mountains go, no trip to Cape Town would be complete without riding the cable car to the top of Table Mountain to soak up the views from one of the New 7th Wonders of the World. Depending on your timeframe, explore the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, go pub-hopping down Long Street or go wine tasting in the Winelands (or, closer to the city, the Constantia Wine Route).
