Angus is known as the birthplace of Scotland. In 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath was signed at Arbroath Abbey, marking Scotland’s establishment as an independent nation. For visitors, Angus is a county that has it all: rolling hills, sandy beaches, championship golf courses and historic castles. It is an area rich in Pictish history, with many remnants (such as the sculpted stones of Aberlemno, St Vigeans, Kirriemuir and Monifieth) still visible today. Other notable historic sites worth visiting include Glamis Castle, Arbroath Signal Tower museum and the Bell Rock Lighthouse. With farming and agriculture as the primary industry in the area, Angus is home to some of the finest fresh produce in Scotland, and dining out here is a delicious experience. Try some local flavour and order the world-famous Aberdeen Angus beef, Arbroath Smokies, or indulge in artisan street food. Be sure to wash it down with local vodka (made from potatoes) or gin flavoured with local berries. Enjoy the many fascinating visitor attractions, go on a bike ride through the Angus countryside, take a scenic trip on the historic Caledonian Railway, explore the beaches and lochs and make memories that will last a lifetime.
